The Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at West Point is an internationally respected inter-disciplinary teaching department – home to world-class military and civilian scholars. To sustain and improve upon this level of excellence and to fulfill our vision of inspiring, educating, and developing the future of our Army, we are currently seeking officers from all commissioning sources who hold a passion for teaching and mentoring future lieutenants and a desire to earn a masters degree or PhD at a premier graduate school (fully-funded by the Army)




Masters Degree / Rotating Faculty Positions (Application deadline is 1 December annually; graduate school would begin Summer 2010 for the 2008 application deadline, Summer 2011 for the 2009 deadline, and so on. Positions in the Summer 2010 cohort are open primarily to officers from Year Groups 2001, 2002, and 2003 and generally follow a five-year timeline: two years in graduate school and three years of teaching.) All of our instructors have the opportunity earn a degree from a premier graduate school. BS&L instructors usually obtain degrees that support and enhance their ability to teach and conduct research the following disciplines:

Leadership and Management Instructor (earn an MBA)

Leadership Instructor (earn a Masters in Organizational Psychology or Social Psychology)

Leadership and Sociology Instructor (earn a Masters in Sociology; focus on Military Sociology)

Psychology and Educational Psychology Instructor (earn a Masters in Educational Psychology, Adult Development or Engineering Psychology)

Psychology Instructor (earn a Masters in Psychology)

Engineering Psychology Instructor (earn a Masters in Human Factors Engineering, Cognitive Science or Biopsychology)







PhD / Rotating Faculty Positions(Application deadline is 1 December 2008; PhD program would begin Summer 2010. Eligibility varies based on officer ’s rank and career standing.)

Assistant Professor of Leadership and Management (earn a PhD in a discipline related to Leadership, Organizational Psychology, and/or Management)

Assistant Professor of Psychology (earn a PhD in a Psychology-related discipline)







Eisenhower Leadership Program / Cadet Company Tactical Officer
(Application deadline is 1 December 2008; 12-month graduate school program would begin Summer 2010. (The ADSO for ELDP graduates is 3 years) Positions are primarily open to officers from Year Groups 2001, 2002, and 2003).

Officers selected for the Eisenhower Leadership Program earn a 1-year Master of Arts Degree in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University and serve a follow-on tour as a Cadet Company Tactical Officer. NOTE: This is a 12-month program. The ADSO begins upon completion of the Master's program.  Eight to ten openings.
