Background:

The United States Military Academy Orienteering Team will host a weekend clinic in order to teach individuals the fundamentals of Orienteering.  This workshop is open to the public, and can be used by Boy Scouts to assist them in completing the majority of the Orienteering Merit Badge requirements. Upon finishing the workshop, scouts will have completed tasks 1-7 of the Merit Badge requirements while getting experience on white, yellow, and orange level courses.  Scouts will participate in various classroom exercises and practical applications, culminating with the courses.  All questions and comments can be sent to the Cadet in Charge (CIC), CDT Kevin Culberg kevin.culberg@usma.edu or COL Mike Hendricks, michael.hendricks@usma.edu We encourage any and all questions pertaining to the weekend's activities, and will continue to update the website with information.

Key Information:

    Tentative Schedule And Rules

    Directions

  • Packing List: Participants must be prepared for this weekend.  The weather over the past few years has been both extremely cold and rainy.  Dry clothes are a must, and Troop leaders must stress the importance of having enough clothes, as training will continue in rain or shine.  It is also recommended that Scouts bring separate clothes for training, as orienteering is run over various terrain features (including water, mud, etc).  All participants must be prepared with pens, pencils, a notebook, and a compass.  It is not necessary for Scouts to purchase a special or professional compass as lensatic or base plate compasses will work fine.  These training items are a must for the weekend's activities.

  • Camping: Barracks will not be available to scouts as they have been in years past.  However, camping will be available at Camp Buckner on an open field used as a helicopter landing zone.  Port-a-Potties will also be provided.  Open fires are not currently allowed on the camp grounds, but that may change.  Again, we stress that you be prepared for wet and windy weather.
  • Meals: Meals must be provided and prepared by each individual Group. It is requested that lunches be packed due to time constraints.  There will be flat areas where Troops can prepare food.  Also, if grills/stoves are used, each Troop is responsible for having a Fire Extinguisher with them.  This cannot be stressed enough and throughout the weekend, cadets will be spot checking each Troop.
  • **A Chili cook-off will be hosted on Saturday night.  Any individuals or groups may enter their chili to be tested and judged by cadets.  Participation is voluntary, but highly encouraged!

  • Awards: Awards will be given to the group with the fastest time on each course and to the troop with the overall fastest times for the weekend.

  • Frequently Asked Questions:
How is cell phone coverage at Camp Buckner?
Cell phone coverage is rather poor so it is recommended that leaders take that into account when making plans for the weekend.

Should the waivers be mailed or brought to the event?
Either option is fine.  However, it is probably more convenient to bring the completed waivers to the event and turn them in when arriving.

    Is camping mandatory?
Camping is not mandatory to participate in the Workshop activities.  Due to the schedule starting early and ending later it is most often easiest for groups to camp in the area provided.

How will the classes be conducted?
Each group will be paired up with a cadet instructor.  This cadet will stay with you during all of the classroom exercises and will cover the full curriculum that will be taught over the course of the weekend.  Classes range from simple lecture style to hands-on with participants measuring pace and identifying features on a course walkthrough.

    What is the minimum age?
There is no minimum age.  However, younger participants should have appropriate adult supervision while participating in the weekend activities.
