SS490B Winning the Peace
This course is designed to educate company grade officers to act as "Soldier Statesmen" in the field. "Winning the Peace" was designed in 2003-04 through the collaborative efforts of personnel from eight academic departments at the US Military Academy, Columbia University's Center for International Conflict Resolution, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, US Army Training and Doctrine Command, US Army Command and General Staff College, US Joint Forces Command, and DoD Training Transformation office. In addition, extensive input was received from veterans of peacekeeping operations and OEF (Afghanistan) and OIF (Iraq), as well as interagency actors and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The Department of Social Sciences first offered this course as an elective in the Spring of 2005, and it is consistently updated based on input from scholars, practitioners, and Army professionals throughout the world who are actively working to win the peace. The course goals, objectives, and skillset are provided in the linked syllabus, and the reading assignments and list are a work in progress as we race to keep pace with developments in this area. The ultimate objective of this course is to educate both future Army officers and as wide of a community about these topics, including by exporting as many products as possible (reading list, syllabus, DVD production of the course) to the wider Army, Department of Defense, and others throughout the U.S.
This course is made possible by the generous contributions of the Compton Foundation.
