What We Do
The Department of
English contributes to the total education of cadets by accomplishing four
objectives:
- Teaching
cadets to organize their ideas effectively and to express them clearly.
- Providing cadets rewarding ways of reading literature and nurturing their
imaginations.
- Making cadets sensitive to the value of leading an examined life by
developing in them an understanding of basic philosophical concepts,
especially the language, arguments, and methods of moral discourse .
- Bringing cadets to an appreciation of the diverse cultures that constitute
America and the world by studying texts that define those cultures.

General
The faculty consists of both active duty officers and
civilian professors. Active duty officers come from all branches,
and the Department seeks variety in both branches and commissioning
sources. Officers selected attend graduate school for two years to
obtain the MA degree and subsequently teach for three years at the
Academy.
To be eligible to compete for a position on the faculty,
officers must have completed the career course and company-level
command. Their records must be such that their branches are
willing to nominate them for the USMA faculty. To evaluate
applicants, the Department must have recent GRE scores and a copy of an
officer’s undergraduate transcript. Careful consideration of
potential military faculty starts about two years before the beginning
of Advanced Civil Schooling (ACS).
Officers interested in
competing for a teaching assignment in the Department of English
should complete the
initial Interest Application directly from:
