The Problem of the Week (POTW) is an activity of the United States Military Academy's
Math Forum. Once each week's problem is closed out, a new problem will be posted and the solution to the previous problem will be added at the end of this page. The
point of contact for the POTW contest is Dr. Lizz Moseman.

The POTW is a program that exists in some form or variation at many of the top colleges and universities across the nation and around the world. Each week, a new ... exciting ... and challenging problem will be posted to this homepage. Interested cadets, faculty, and other individuals outside USMA are welcome and encouraged to participate. The POTW contest will span the entire academic year at West Point, but "Top Guns" (winners) will be identified in three categories for each of the two semesters--Fall 08 and Spring 09, and prizes will be awarded to each. The categories are:
All interested parties will have access to the problem at 16:00 hours (4 p.m. EST) on Thursday of Week "n" and will have until 16:00 on Thursday of Week "n+1" to present their solutions. The first problem will be posted 04 September 2008 and the final problem for the fall semester will be posted 04 December 2008 (a total of 15 problems). Shortly thereafter we will announce the Top Guns for the semester. Details of the Spring semester will be forthcoming. Tell your friends and acquaintances, both at USMA and outside the Academy, about the POTW and urge them to participate. Good luck!
Failure to follow these directions may result in your submission not making into the pile in the right order! Each problem will be worth a maximum of 10 points, with correctness, completeness and timeliness factoring into one's score. The first correct and complete solution received will be awarded 10 points, the second will get 9 points, and so on. Answers with no work are not complete solutions. The fifth correct respondent will receive 6 points, and each subsequent solution received before the deadline will receive a maximum of 5 points. This permits respondents who are unable to get timely access to the problem for a given week to still remain competitive over the course of the term. For Academy personnel: no documentation is required, "Max Partial Credit" rules will be considered (within reason), and a response of "BEAT NAVY" or "BEAT AIR FORCE" will earn you the big "H-Bomb" (Hooah), but no points. For participants outside USMA: we welcome your participation and eagerly await the healthy competition! Scores will be posted around Monday following the problem's closeout on the previous Thursday. Check out your scores at the POTW Scoreboard! |
